The Rushes

Residential / New Build

Richard and Emma came to us with 2 acres of woodland occupied with a dilapidated existing cottage with the ambition of creating an exemplary new family home to replace the existing cottage. We were inspired by idea of fully embracing life within the trees, and adopted a design approach that retained all the mature oak trees within the vicinity of the house. This resulted in a form dictated by the position of the trees and a floor plan that wraps around the trunks. The living accommodation is designed according to the orientation on the site, with generous glazing to the south elevation to make use of solar gain in the winter months. Each room has a different and special relationship with the surrounding landscape; providing different perspectives and experiences of the woodland from the interior.

Budget: Approx £450k
