Course Overview

The Introduction to Architecture (Level 1) course is an in-person course designed for schoolchildren between 11 and 16 years old.

Teaching is delivered to schoolchildren in Norfolk over 3 sessions and the course is delivered in locations across the county.

Learning is comprised of the following modules:

Module 1a - Amazing Architecture!

Module 1a of the course introduces students to some of the key components of architecture and architectural thinking, including materiality, journeys, user experience and order.

Clipboard and pencils in hand, students will learn to survey a building, then take on a selection of design challenges to explore the importance of team work and instinctive thinking. At an on-site location, students will explore themes of architecture, and have the opportunity to express their own architectural ideas.

Module 1b - Placemaking!

Module 1b focuses on placemaking and challenges students to take on the role of architect! They are given a client, a brief, and a blank field and tasked with creating the most successful new place to live. Using Ensemble’s innovative Charrette™ architecture game, students will create a physical 3D design for a client, and learn to work with a design brief.

Will you succeed in attaining planning permission? How much will you focus on the environment? Will your friends want to live there too?!

Module 1c - Look Around!

Module 1c of the course offers students the opportunity to take a guided tour of a historic Norfolk village to discover the intention and stories behind the architecture. The session will inspire students to look around them and recognise the contribution of both large and small architectural interventions on our overall experience of a place.

In teams, students will participate in a visual quiz to discover the architecture on every street. The module concludes with students using the innovative design stix to create a fast-paced set of plans and sections for a new building.
